Dr. Lihi Eder presented data from the Toronto Psoriasis Cohort today (oral abstract 1850) that propose new potential risk factors for the development of PsA in patients with psoriasis. The study prospectively followed patients with dermatologist-confirmed psoriasis with rheumatology assessments for the development of PsA.
Of the 464 psoriasis patients who were followed, 51 developed PsA according to the CASPAR criteria, for an estimated annual incidence of 2.7 (95% CI 2.1, 3.6). The risk of developing PsA appeared to remain stable over time.
In terms of risk factors, some of the "usual suspects" were identified, including nail pitting, severe psoriasis and older age. New risk factors included lower education, inflammatory eye disease, pustular psoriasis, use of retinoids and use of thyroid medications.
