Competency Based Training in Rheumatology

Dr. David Robinson delivered a presentation on competency-based training in rheumatology during the National Update at the 2015 Canadian Rheumatlogy Association Annual Scientific Meeting. Dr. Robinson is chair of the Canadian Royal College Training Committee for Rheumatology.

Most Canadian rheumatology training programs are based on the Objectives of Training documentation. These objectives are considered to be the minimal standard that a resident must meet by the end of their training. However, current training programs are time-based (2 years).

A new system, dubbed ″Competency by Design″ will significantly change the way training programs in Canada are run. This new system will involve milestones that residents must meet in order to move forward with their training. There will be clearly defined competencies for each stage of training. Residents will be required to meet pre-defined competencies at each stage before being able to move forward. Time will only be a guide, however, this new system is not anticipated to shorten the duration of subspecialty training for rheumatology.

The timeline for the initial transition for rheumatology will be 2017 with complete implementation by 2019.

Sorry residents, but the Royal College Exam in Rheumatology will remain!
