A Theory of Everything: Masters of the ACR: Is it string theory or STRAND theory?

November 9 2015 2:00 PM ET via RheumReports RheumReports

Last year in RheumReports I discussed Masters and few Mistresses of the ACR. There was a long list this year of very deserving Masters.

There really was the ‘Theory of Everything’ with giants in RA, SLE, SSc, vasculitis, SpA and multiple other diseases, treatment approaches, etc. such as Professor Josef Smolen, Mike Weinblatt, Stefan Gay, Len Calabrese, Daniel Wallace, and Ferdinand Breedveld. Kim Oen and Alan Rosenberg became Masters of the ACR, and are outstanding Canadian pediatric rheumatologists who networked in many observational and treatment cohorts in kids with JIA, and were part of the early family of Canadian pediatric rheumatology.

Once again there were not many women (low ratio of high heels and dresses), but Dr. Vibeke Strand (small and mighty, but always well heeled increasing the style ratio in rheumatology) received a well-deserved award as a Master. She has contributed not to string theory, but STRAND theory with spidergrams of SF36 (and other outcomes), improving on effective treatments, and becoming closer to the general age/sex matched population in various domains. She has contributed over the years to SLE, RA, trial design, understanding SEBs, patient-reported outcomes, etc.

I also hypothesized last year that Masters have a higher likelihood of being journal editors (congrats to Tore Kvien for years of great work and editor of ARD). Canadian, Dr. Rob Inman, helped us understand basic and translational science in seronegative arthritis/SpA. Also, David Wofsy received a Presidential gold medal for work with the ACR and is known for his SLE expertise. Dinesh Khanna was recognized for his work in scleroderma (and gout, RA, etc!) as a young star receiving the Henry Kunkel award.

Next year we will see if the male predominance is lessening over time in the Masters circle!
