A Beautiful Oasis in the Heart of the City

November 8 2015 7:54 PM ET via RheumReports RheumReports

If you have some time during this busy ACR, make a trip to the Japanese Tea Garden of San Francisco, located inside Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. This beautiful oasis, the essence of calm and tranquility, is actually the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States. Designed by Japanese landscape architect Makota Hagiwara, the lush green grounds feature an arched drum bridge, Japanese maple trees, stone paths that weave between ponds filled with vibrant Koi fish, as well as gorgeous pagodas, that make a gorgeous backdrop for a San Francisco tourist snapshot or social media selfie.

Make sure to visit the tea room, where you will be treated to a variety of excellent green tea blends, as well as tasty desserts like green tea cheesecake and ice cream. The gift shop is also full of interesting finds including Japanese tea sets and origami Christmas tree ornaments. The surrounding neighborhood is also a gem, and really gives off a California, San Fran vibe with trendy cafés, cute boutique shops and some of the best Vietnamese food I have ever tasted! Check out Perilla, located at 836 Irving Street, and make sure you sample their garlic noodles!

Leave some room for home-made ice cream and sorbets at San Francisco's Hometown Creamery, located at 1290 9th Avenue. I would recommend the mint chocolate chip ice cream, so fresh you can taste the delicious garden grown mint, but check out their other selections that make use of delicious ingredients like cardamom and earl grey tea.

Check out these gems in the city - although they are a bit of a trek from the conference centre, they are definitely worth the trip if you have the time!
