Welcome to San Francisco - Feels like Home!

November 9 2015 6:00 PM ET via RheumReports RheumReports

Like most Newfoundlanders, I always have a low-grade, chronic level of homesickness for my native province. To my great surprise and probably yours too, coming to San Francisco feels somewhat like coming home. Call me crazy, but there are some similarities between this city and my previous hometown, St John's.

First and maybe most obviously is the crazy steep hills. At least there is no snow and ice to worry about on the streets of San Francisco!

Second, the townhouses, albeit not as colourful as our jellybean row houses in St John's.

I see from the name of one cab company here, this city is also known as Fog City. Thank goodness we have had mostly sunshine so far for this ACR.

Finally, the unbelievably beautiful coastline. I had the good fortune to have the opportunity prior to ACR to drive south on Highway 1 to Big Sur. The spectacular coast with plunging seaside cliffs and waves crashing against the rocks was truly reminiscent of the rugged shores of Newfoundland, just a few degrees warmer!!

So maybe with these similarities to my beloved St John's, I will leave at least a little bit of my heart in San Francisco. I hope you will have the opportunity some day to experience first-hand the beauty of both cities.
