Bigger that EULAR ...

June 9 2016 12:28 AM ET via RheumReports RheumReports

You may think EULAR is the biggest event in London this week; but you are wrong by a long shot. This weekend London will host a much more monumental event, the Queen's 90th birthday. This makes her the longest reigning monarch ever, serving alongside many British Prime Ministers from Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher to present day. Even if you are not a usual Royal watcher, it promises to be a spectacular 2-day celebration that will not disappoint.

You may know her actual birthday is April 21st but the tradition for all sovereigns has been to hold an official celebration during the warmer months. This year it will be hosted this coming Saturday and Sunday just as EULAR is wrapping up.

On Saturday, there will be Trooping the Colours, a majestic parade marching from Buckingham Palace led by the birthday girl herself. On Sunday, a massive public picnic with 10,000 invited guests lunching on cucumber sandwiches and biscuits in the Mall around the Palace.

Interestingly, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen's husband, will celebrate his 95th birthday this Friday. Quite the long living couple they are! I wonder what rheumatologic issues they have and do they have a rheumatologist in residence at the Palace?? If not I think I know a few takers; present company included!

If all this Royal mumbo jumbo is not your cup of tea, here's a side bonus to all the celebrations: the pubs in London will be allowed to stay open extra late this weekend... until 1 AM!! Enjoy a few pints after a long week of learning in London and watch some football alongside the crazed European soccer fans as England plays in Euro2016.

Long live the Queen.
