The best way to stay organized at ACR 2014 is by downloading the official ACR 2014 Meeting App (get it on App Store for Apple iOS, or Google Play for Android). This is the best meeting App we have ever seen period! It will help keep you organized.

Sunday, November 16, 2014 is the first day of official scientific meeting events. The day starts early with the Year in Review (07:30-08:30 in Exhibit Hall C). At the same time there is another interesting talk on mechanism of action of medications including methotrexate, aspirin, and colchicine (253B).

The poster sessions open at 08:30 and cover a wide range of topics. I like to introduce myself to the author and ask him/her to "take me through your poster." This is a great way to meet new people and learn a lot about their research.

At 09:00 there is a talk on the "New Immunology of the Spondyloarthropathies" (210B). At the same time, the ARHP has a neat talk on resiliency from a patient perspective (107B). If you're a rheumatology fellow and new to the ACR, check out a presentation on "How to Navigate the Poster Hall" (301). The poster tours also start at 09:00 and this is a fantastic way to learn some pearls about the research being presented and to put the research into context.

At 11:00 the first ACR Plenary Session gets underway in Exhibit Hall C. The ACR plenary sessions are usually quite good and this particular plenary will look at "Secukinumab in Active Ankylosing Spondylitis." At the same time there is an "Immunology Boot Camp – The Basics of Targeted Therapy" (52A) and "New ACR Recommendations for the Management of RA" (Ballroom East).

At 13:00 there are a few good one-hour sessions including, "Gout Management in 2014", "Axial Spondyloarthritis Guidelines", "Avoiding Electronic Health Record Errors", "How the Gut Primes the Immune System", and "The Butterfly Effect: Lupus Rashes and their Mimics". At least one of those should keep you entertained for an hour.

At 14:30 the ACR & ARHP concurrent abstract start. These run for an hour and a half and focus on a collection of several abstracts in a related field of study. The topics include, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathies, systemic lupus, systemic sclerosis, vasculitis, gout, osteoarthritis, and improving the quality and efficiency of your practice. The ACR Great Debate also kicks off at 14:30 with this year's topic: "Belimumab for the Treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus." I wonder if the ACR debate will be as lively and entertaining as the debates among their Canadian counterparts to the North?

At 16:30 there are a number of ACR abstract sessions covering a wide range of topics including fibromyalgia, imaging, myositis, osteoporosis, pain, JIA, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathies, lupus, and systemic sclerosis. Your day will end at 18:00. Time to head back to the hotel, hit the gym, or take a power nap. Have a great night but remember tomorrow will be busier!
