Masters but few mistresses at the ACR Awards

November 16 2014 4:21 PM ET via RheumReports RheumReports

There were giant names who received ACR Masters awards this year. Kudos were given to many who are household rheumatology names.

Scleroderma people really were on display: Loic Guillevin (vasculitis and scleroderma), Rich Silver (scleroderma insights including the lung), and Virginia Steen (databases and many clinical insights over decades).

There was also Betty Diamond (a leader in lupus and mentor to many generations), Dr. Allan Gibofsky (a lawyer and a doctor), and Stefano Bombardieri, editor of Clin & Exp Rheum.

Marc Hochberg who has been a dedicated researcher and ACR volunteer in so many areas and diseases and is editor of Seminars in A&R was also recognized.

Another giant who received Masters accolades is Jean Paul Pelletier who has dedicated years to understanding the basic science perturbations in OA and has 11 presentations.

Other well-deserving rheumatologists who have carved their name into textbooks and our lexicon were honoured. Our own Earl Silverman received a mentoring award (and is editor of J Rheumatol).

You can see a theme of long career dedication (and maybe being editors of Rheumatology journals), but XX chromosomes were under-represented. There were only two masters at the ACR who were mistresses which likely reflects the face of rheumatology in the past. We can expect to see more dresses and high heels at the ACR Opening Ceremony and Awards.
