Dr. Carter Thorne

Dr. Carter Thorne

Carter Thorne, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and is on the Consultant Staff at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, where he is Chief of the Division of Rheumatology. He is also Director of The Arthritis Program, an inter-professional care program established to optimize outcomes for people who have arthritis and rheumatic disorders.

Dr. Thorne is Principal Investigator with The Arthritis Program Research Group Inc. He has established an Early Arthritis Clinic, collaborating with the CATCH national initiative, of which he is Operations Director, and an Osteoporosis Intervention Clinic.

Dr. Thorne sits on the Steering and Scientific Committee of the Ontario Best Practices Research Initiative, and he is a founding member and currently Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Rheumatology Research Consortium. He is a founding member and Past-President (2006-2010) of the Ontario Rheumatology Association, and was President of the Canadian Rheumatology Association from 2012-2014. He is past Secretary-Treasurer of PANLAR, and has served on the steering committee of CARE, a European-based group interested in the non-pharmacologic management of arthritis.

In addition to his many appointments and research activities, Dr. Thorne has been actively involved in advocating for the development, support and adoption of models of care to enhance outcomes of those with arthritis. He is also engaged in improving the health of the community, as a member of the York Region District Health Council and Chair of the amalgamated Simcoe-York District Health Council (1998-1999).
